Futurabond U (FBU)

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I use Futurabond U to repair ceramic crowns?

Yes. Futurabond U is indicated for the repair of all substrates, including ceramic restorations (such as crowns) without an additional primer or activator.

Can I use a separate etch?

As a universal adhesive indicated in all etch modes (self-etch, total etch or selective etch), Futurabond U is indicated as both a self etcher as well as a total etcher, which would then require a separate etch.

Will Futurabond U self-cure?

Yes, Futurabond U will self-cure when used in tandem with other self-cure materials. For example, when cementing in a crown with a dual-cure resin cement, Futurabond U will self cure with the self-cure feature of that cement and will utilize the same setting time.

What is the working time after opening Futurabond U?

The working time is approximately 5 minutes after mixing the material and 3 minutes after perforation of the foil. The clinical issue with leaving an open blister sitting during a procedure is evaporation of the ethanol carrier, which is responsible for delivering the chemistry into the tubules.

Is Futurabond U available in a bottle?

No. Futurabond U is offered in a SingleDose blister pack. This is to ensure pure chemistry and maximize consistency of the chemistry intended for each and every use. For those that prefer a bottle system, we have an adhesive bottle system called Futurabond M+.

Do I have to keep Futurabond U refrigerated?

No, refrigeration is not required for Futurabond U.

How do I prep a tooth before placing a crown using Futurabond U?

1. Prepare the cavity or core according to the principles of the adhesive restoration technique. Clean with water. Dry off excess water with a gentle stream of air. Do not overdry the dentin. The objective is a surface with a silky matte appearance. Protect areas near to the pulp with a suitable cavity lining based on calcium hydroxide.

2. Etching of the dental hard tissue (optional)
In the self-etch mode, Futurabond U achieves high levels of adhesive strength on enamel and dentin. Prior etching of the dental hard tissue may optionally be carried out. Only enamel which is unprepared must always be etched at the beginning of the bonding process (e.g. in the luting of Maryland bridges).

- Etch the surfaces to be etched using a dental acid-etch agent based on phosphoric acid (see applicable instructions for use).
- Aspirate the acid-etch agent, rinse with water for approx. 20 s. Dry off excess moisture with a gentle stream of air. Do not overdry the dentin. The objective is a surface with a silky matte appearance

Please refer to the Futurabond U Instructions for Use for more information.

What does it mean that Futurabond U is nano-reinforced?

The SiO2 nano-particles (20 nm) in Futurabond U enhance resin cross-linking and film-building, ensuring optimal wetting of collagen fibers and enamel etching patterns. These particles strengthen the hybrid layer for long-lasting bond strength. A single coat guarantees a stable composite-to-tooth bond, with a "Stick Immediately Effect" preventing blow-out during air drying. The 13-micron hybrid layer provides superior marginal integrity and reduces sensitivity, ensuring reliable performance and protection. These small particles also drive material down into the tubules, which gives you deeper penetration and thus enhanced mechanical retention.

Is a dual cure activator required with Futurabond U?

No, an additional dual cure activator is not required.

Is any additional conditioners or primers needed when using in combination with metals, ceramics or zirconia restoration?

No additional primers or conditioners are required for use all substrates, including metals, ceramics or zirconia.

Will Futurabond U bond to brackets?

Yes, Futurabond U is indicated for use with all substrates, including metal and ceramics.

When used as a desensitizer as indicated, will Futurabond U leave a stain on the tooth?

No, once cured, Futurabond U is hydrophobic, which repels staining elements and eliminates staining concerns.

What is the bond strength of Futurabond U?

Over 30 MPa of adhesion to dentin and enamel
with LC composites while reaching high total-etch
adhesion levels with DC and SC composites

*Internal measurements

Do I have to worry about evaporation of the solvent when applying Futurabond U?

No, Futurabond U's patented SingleDose System minimizes the challenge of solvent evaporation which is a known issue with any bottle system – this ensures consistent chemistry and thus reliable high bond strength for each and every application. It is recommended to use Futurabond U within 3 minutes after perforating the SingleDose packaging to avoid solvent evaporation.

Is Futurabond U a Silane or contain Silane?

No, Futurabond U is not a silane nor does it contain a silane. It does include chemistry that acts in a similar fashion to silane to allow for a successful bond to ceramic and metals.

Does Futurabond U contain any fluoride?

There is NO fluoride added to Futurabond U.

How is Futurabond U pronounced?

Futur-a-bond YOU
